What to do when you’re in an introduction?

Published May 9, 2013 by Kokomo

So, as my last post stated, I got a new girl to add to the group. Being well-aware that Maarit isn’t going to last forever, I chose a girl that was the same age as Koko and Ruma. I knew that at a certain point in the near future, I was going to have to introduce her to Koko and Ruma. And as I was home for two weeks after my second surgery (left hand), I decided now was as good a time as any. I put them together as soon as I got home with Lumi. At this point, Lumi and Maarit had been together for over 48 hrs without any troubles.

The first hour was very boring. They sniffed each other, they ran around in the Duna trying to find a way out (mostly Koko and Ruma of course, not being used to being in a Duna very often) and they pooped. They also knew where to find the food and water, so so far, so good. After a while, little shenanigans started happening; Lumi and Ruma rolling around, but mostly Koko and Lumi going at eachother. Koko is the alpha, EVERYTHING belongs to her, so naturally, she’s not going to be happy about sharing. She’s a little (wel, big fat) bitch. Lumi figured she had to at least test if Koko really was the alpha, and if she was any good at it. Well.. six nights with little sleep later, the calm started to come and they moved from the Duna to a quarter RS and added a hammock. So far so good. Strangely, since they have been in there, Koko started picking on Maarit again (again? sigh…), but it hasn’t been disastrous. I added some elements to prevent her from getting angry (a second dish of food, a second toilet) and over the past days I started adding sleeping places until yesterday, I moved them to the bottom half of the RS, which I redecorated and it’s almost as a normal decoration. They are still adjusting and the intro isn’t over, but it’s looking ok.

So what do rats do during an introduction you ask? Well, take a look for yourself…

You cuddle...

You cuddle…

You stretch out...

You stretch out…

You huddle together...

You huddle together…

You pile up...

You pile up.

You curl up...

You curl up…

You dream away...

You dream away…

You wash...

You wash…

And sometimes, you sleep silly...

And sometimes, you sleep silly…

Or lazy...

Or lazy…

REALLY lazy...

REALLY lazy…

Or just downright insane...

Or just downright insane…

Thanks for laughing! 🙂 More pictures are acomin’!

A quick bother

Ladies and gents, boys and girls, people who make me happy (yes, you do make me happy by reading, liking, commenting and following – ooh and sharing), this is my first and hopefully only off topic post. I am promoting myself. I have added a new blog to my wordpress.com list. I mean, I am writing another blog. Yes, I know, how is it possible since I have trouble committing to this one (it’s all or nothing innit?), but I need another blog to write about other stuff then just rats so please forgive me 🙂

I’d be thrilled if you’d come and check it out here!  Thanks a million!

C(r)atty behavior!

Soooooo, I havn’t been a good blogger lately. So sorry! It’s not that I lack funny or sweet stories, I lacked the mood to post about the ladies. See, last Sunday I returned home from a birthday where I spent a good part of the afternoon with a kitten on my lap. I played around with the little critter and obviously got catsmell all over me. When I got home, the ladies were ready to cuddle as I had been gone all weekend. But as soon as they smelled me, they freaked.

This has happened before, and I knew it was going to take a day or 2 for them to trust my smell again. So, I didn’t spend a lot of time with the ladies, or at home and soon decided blog time was future talk.

What also ruined my mood is the fact that I have discovered a MOUSE! It’s running around when the ladies are caged up and doesn’t seem to be intimidated by their smell at ALL. I just stuffed a really dirty and stinky towel I got out of the cage today in the corner where I know the mouse enters my room and I am HOPING that will keep it away. It sucks because thanks to the ladies, there is food everywhere for mice. In the past, the smell of my rats had always kept the critters away (even when I lived in a mouse infested house), but this one seems to have a mind of it’s own. Now it’s quite hard to distinguish rat-gnawing or mouse-gnawing on my food. I know people may think: what’s the difference? Well, my rats are domesticed and bare NO infectious diseases or bacteria at all. Mice are yucky!

But, back to the reason why I got back to posting. Today, the ladies were running around freely and as Koko was being her annoying and destroying self, Ruma had other plans. I am not sure if she was tired or maybe she’s not feeling very well, but the little madam, after climbing through my clothes twice, sat down on my right hand, right in the palm and started washing herself. Not a big exception, she does wash herself 2/3 of the day, but today was different. She washed and washed and itched and scratched and occasionally licked my hands and when she was finished, after about 7 minutes, she curled up and settled down. IN THE PALM OF MY HAND!

We’re talking a female rat here, infamous for not being able to sit still, and above that Ruma, who never likes to sleep in an open space.

To top all of this off, madam starts bruxing and boggling. With her little paws she grabs my thumb and holds on tightly to it and I manage to grab my phone with my left hand and capture this amazingly endearing moment. I managed to keep her there, and Koko away, for about ten minutes until my hand felt like it was going to fall off. I tried switching hands but I disturbed her too much and after some time, she buggered off on her own.

These moments remind me why I love rats. They are as stubborn as cats but when you get their affection, it is SO well deserved. Someone is going to have one good night’s sleep tonight! (despite of that STUPID mouse). <3<3<3

A linky post

Today, October 4th, it’s World Animal Day. In the Netherlands, this is a big thing. Lots of people spoil their pets a little extra and companies take advantage of this fact by advertising weeks in advance. For my Koko and Ruma, it’s just an ordinary day. They don’t know what the date is and I wouldn’t know how to spoil them extra today, since they are already spoiled to pieces (they both got a whole boiled egg yesterday and I put down another pea-pool today, which turned out only to be a treat to Koko – more on that here) so I decided I could do some good for other animals.

Whilst reading another rat-blog (currently not in use, but still great to read) http://rattie.blogspot.nl (nl meaning it’s most probably done by a Dutch person, yay), I came across this site; http://www.marscandykills.com, watched the video -which I cannot, for the life of me, get to work here, so just click on the site-

and was disgusted beyond words. I was shocked, amazed, appalled, scared, upset and felt I should take action all at the same time. Needless to say I will not be buying anymore Mars products. But besides that, I did a little research and found out that my favorite cosmetics brands also do animal testing. I will switch brands as well. No, I am not throwing out everything I already bought. Yes, I will look for animal-testing-free products from now on.

Taken from the website marscandykills.com I don’t own any rights.

By the way, the list mentioned on the website isn’t all Mars produces, so if you’re gonna stick to principles, don’t buy anything the Mars company produces. This means some very famous brands of pet-food as well! Check out all about Mars here . You can click on the tab ‘brands’ and find out if you’re buying any Mars products yourself.

For me, this means giving up one of my most favorite snacks in the world: M&M’s. But when I think of what is done to poor, defenseless animals, I am happy to give them up. I gave up McDonalds and cigarettes, I think I can add M&M’s to the list.

What are you doing this year for World Animal Day?

Koko’s excessive exercise routine

Published September 25, 2012 by Kokomo

I think it has happened. Whatever was in the food or the water that I fed my ladies. It has hit base. Koko, already quite an odd little (or not so little actually) creature, has now officially lost it. I am quite certain of it.

It started with this; when I first got Koko, I thought she needed exercise so I bought one of those big balls that hamsters, guinea pigs or rats can run around in. Koko was just tiny back then, but I figured, the younger she is, the better she’ll learn. I put her in, using some force, and put the ball on the floor. She was so completely freaked out by this confined space that moved and smelled unfamiliar, she started moving wildly. Now this was when she would still poop whenever she was stressed out which, in those days, was every time I took her out of the cage. So, while frantically moving around in that ball, which caused the ball to roll around swiftly, she started pooping out of stress. The ball was rolling around quite fast which caused her little droppings to be launched all around the room. Needless to say, after I managed to pick myself up of the floor from rolling around laughing (seriously tears rolling down my cheeks), and clean up the droppings, I found this wasn’t a success. Several times I tried it as she grew bigger, but not even her gutsy little sister, Ruma (being a big fan and daily user of the silent spinner), wanted to be inside that big fuchsia pink ball. So the ball disappeared among the other unused rat toys I spent a fortune on (I now make most toys myself, as they completely destroy most things anyway), under my bed (great storage place in a 1 bedroom apt..

Then, a few weeks ago, I saw someone’s cage setup and I saw they used the ball as a  home/nest for their rats. Since I like to mix the cage up every now and then (or pretty much every week), I thought I’d give it a try. And whaddaya know? Koko sleeps in it. ALL THE TIME.

If that wasn’t enough indication, yesterday I cried tears of laughter again. I had eaten a baguette and put the 2 ends (I hate eating those) in the cage. One was instantly found by Koko and she instantly attacked it. But, a little while later, she found the other, much bigger piece, which I had put in the bottom of the cage. I wish the camera function on my phone still worked because this would have been a video worth posting! She spent a full 10 minutes (!!!!) holding the peace in her mouth, walking around the cage in circles. Going down one floor, walking a circle, coming back up one floor, walking through one of the tubes (I thought she would hide it in there), walking back down one floor, coming back up, trying to enter the tunnel to the upper cage, doing another circle and so on and so on. She just wouldn’t drop the peace of bread or stop circling. I am sure she lost it for a moment there. Shortcircuit in her brain or something like that.

Sadly, I was so amused by the whole thing I forgot to take pictures, so for once, I I only have a stolen pic of a silent spinner to illustrate my blog, but don’t despair, I am sure she will get into other trouble again soon and I can shower and bore y’all with more pictures. Right now she and Ruma are happily chewing on a piece of old Goat’s cheese each.

Best toy I ever bought for a pet!
