Rats vs kids

Published November 17, 2012 by Kokomo

Are pet rats just like kids? In some aspects, YES THEY ARE!

1. All candy will be stolen and eaten or hidden away.

2. Any wet surface can and MUST be licked.

3. Things aren’t hot until they burn themselves on it.

4. No glass with a drink in it can be left untouched.

We can ALL share

5. Rubber duckies are the best thing ever, especially for putting in your mouth.

6. They never see danger coming.

7. When they fall, they always double over and it looks like they are breaking their necks. 😦

8. They eat, poop, sleep and get into trouble basically.

9. Flinging poop can be SO MUCH fun.

10. Anything breakable must be tested.

11. If it smells like chocolate, it is chocolate and they will eat it.

Tomato? what tomato? I smell chocolate!

12. If it’s quiet for longer then 5 minutes, you KNOW they are up to something.

13. Plastic makes the best sound in the world.

14. EVERYTHING must be tasted.

15. Whatever part of the house you just cleaned, they find it and mess it up.

16. Smartphones are a whole world of fun.

17. Sitting still for a picture is the hardest thing in the world.

Nice and blurry

18. If they can see through it, they can squeeze themselves stuck in it.

19. If they can’t see on top of it, they must climb on top of it.

20. Medicine and chemicals are candy, right?

21. Bath time is fun time.

22. New toys are the best to destroy.

But, we can’t deny it, we love them like crazy! ❤

A milestone!

Hey, Ruma and Koko here.

Just a quick post as we are waaaaaaaaaay to busy napping, we can’t really take time out of our busy napping-eating-free-ranging-pooping schedule to type long posts. But, we feel it is the very necessary to post this as we feel we need to thank YOU. All of you! Everyone who’s been here, reading, liking, following and commenting. We have passed 500 views. Actually, we had 50 views in the past 48 hours. We are so proud, so happy and so thankful! It is keeping our owner inspired to keep writing about us and keep taking pictures and over-sharing about all our nonsense.

Just a little newsflash, she is considering adding two more ladies to our mix. Wondering what that’s going to be like!

Anyways, thanks a million for everything! We love you!!

Why everyone should get pet rats!

Giving my human kisses!

Following up on my post about bad habits, this post will be about how wonderful and funny and smart and sweet my ratties can be and why they make great pets. I could write on and on and on and on and well, on about it forever, but

Sweet Ruma grooming herself.

instead I have decided to give you a top 5. Sorry, couldn’t stick to just 3, I had to make it 5. Enjoy!

5. Grooming

Studies have shown that rats spend 1/3 of their day grooming themselves. That is twice as much a cats do! To that time you can add the time they spend grooming each other. Depending on the size of your pack, that time can vary. My Ruma also likes to spend time grooming me and on a lucky day, Koko will start fishing around in my hair. Rats are clean. Cleaner than cats, WAY cleaner than dogs. If your rat smells, you need to clean the cage, simple as that. They smell bad, because the cage smells bad.

4. Tail wagging

I am sure most of you have never heard of this behavior, but it exists and it is damn cute! This site has dedicated a well 2 lines to this behavior as it is not well researched and no one knows for sure why they do it. I have caught both my ladies doing it and strangly, they were both sitting in nearly the same spot, facing in the same direction. Ruma does it more often, but I have also spotted Koko doing it. Now it’s nothing to be compared to dogs or cats wagging their tales. It’s a quick, almost nervous movement that makes the tail wag quickly and shortly. It’s just so darn cute.

3. Companionship

Rats are, like cats, very independent, they will decide what they do, when they do it and no human can change that. Like dogs, they can learn quickly and if you reward them, but also very much on their own. But they differ from dogs and cats in that they like to be together. I mean, sure, lot’s of people have 2 or more dogs or cats, but those animals do fine when they are alone in the family.

Sharing my drink together

Keeping a rat alone, not such a good idea. Rats live in packs in the wild and even though the domesticated rat is hardly to be compared to the wild one, they still like to be in a pack. A pack can be two, if, like me, you don’t like cleaning the cage every 3 days and don’t have a fortune to spend on food. It’s so adorable to see them together, grooming, playing, sleeping.

I am going to help you type this, so you don’t make any mistakes.

2. Playfulness

Rats are nocturnal by nature but very adaptable in this rythm. They don’t need as much sleep as hamsters for instance, so they will wake up during the day, according to your rythm and are ready to play whenever you like. I’ve played with my girls during all times of the day. It doesn’t really matter what time I get up, as soon as they hear me scurrying about, they come out of their sleeping mode and greet

I’m up, I’m up!

me warmly. Day and night, they are ready to come out, play, cuddle and explore.

1. Bruxing and Boggling

To some people this may seem scary, because of the eyes bulging out of their sockets (see a video here) but to a true ratlover, there is nothing better. It can be compared to a cat purring and it means the rat is very relaxed, and very happy. It’s not behavior they show everyday, so when I do catch them doing it, it makes me so happy because it means I am taking good care of my ladies.

So there you have it. Now if this hasn’t convinced you to buy rats, perhaps you should see some adorable pictures here.

Absent miced… minded…

Sorry people! So so sorry! Especially to those of you who set out to follow my blog seriously. I have been so

Squishing into a box together, after first molesting the box to pieces 🙂

absentminded!

A lot is going on here, forcing me to add a little bit off topic to this post. I have been home from work for about a week and a half with horrible back-aches. Nothing serious, just should have taken some time to recover and I didn’t. To deal with these aches, I had some physical therapy and had to build up to going back to work ‘full-time’. I can tell you, working with pain is exhausting!

Tomorrow I have another fun doctor’s visit planned; the neurologist, to get an exam on the nerves in my hands. My doctor has told me I have Carpal Tunnel Sydrome and in the hospital they will test to see how far it has progressed and what the method of treatment is going to be. Nothing life-threatening, but it is again exhausting to work with pain, to drop every third thing you pick up, not to be able to open jars or bottles and more of that nonsense.

Ruma is munching on diet bars… why?

Cleaning the cage has now gone from being a nasty job to being a task that takes me about 2 hours. I literally drop EVERYTHING to the floor. Koko and Ruma have been VERY helpful, hiding more and more stuff under the bed, where I can’t reach it. And furthermore, I think someone is trying to become an addition to the pack.

Yes, the mouse, the vermin, the rodent that has infested our house has gathered more and more audacity and the other day I caught it climbing INTO THE CAGE! The ladies were vast a sleep somewhere in the top of the cage and never even noticed a sound (such great instincts these animals have….) but I almost flipped! That stupid menace of an animal! Also, it has been stalking me at night. It comes out around 2 am and starts nibbling on things under the bed. LOUDLY! Oooooh, I just want to hurt it. Until I see how small it is, and realize how cold it is outside, and then I feel bad for the little critter. I shouldn’t I know, it’s a pest, but didn’t people think that way about rats too? So it’s a dilemma, it really is. What to do?

Ok, next post will be a behavior top 5. I have it ready, just need to add photo’s. Thnx for reading!

The C(r)at in the bag

Published October 19, 2012 by Kokomo

So when I woke up this morning I decided to let the ladies out as I was still a little sleep drunken. I am home from work for a few days as my back is not properly functioning and this has the ladies all confused because I am home ALL day but I don’t let them out of their cage ALL day (I just don’t have the energy to keep puling them out of places they shouldn’t be). I made myself some coffee and then figured I had all the time in the world to post a new blog. YAY. And then I sat down and realized, I can think of various topics to blog about, but I don’t have any cool pics to put on the blog. And let’s be honest. A blog just ain’t a blog without pics.

Luckily, my ladies seem to understand what I am thinking. I heard some crackling behind me and turned around to find Koko having the time of her life inside the bag that was used to ship my new powercord to me. It has that plastic with the little bubbles inside it. And me oh my was she enjoying this bag.

MY bag. Yes, all MINE. I’m sooooooo excited!

Obviously it wasn’t long before Ruma came sniffing about, finding out what interesting thins Koko was up to. And yes, she too crawled in the bag by the time Koko’s attention span had faded (usually a good 2 minutes).

Great ass shot!

Please excuse the mess. The bag was in my ‘this-is-where-I-put-all-stuff-that-has-no-place-yet-box’ and it’s time to empty that box, before Koko and Ruma do it for me.

As I was enjoying this view of Ruma’s ass, I remembered I had seen this before. In a different setting though. So I went through my pictures and this is what I found:

This smells SO yummy!

Mind you, the bag was empty and this was obviously well before my linky post. Ruma loves the smell of chocolate and licorice and will try to get her little paws on it whenever she can. Little deviant! 🙂

So yeah, the ladies once again reminded my of why they are such great pets. They will always create a great photo opportunity.( It’s just the lack of proper equipment that makes the pictures not so great :(. If you’d like to donate towards this good cause, just let me know! )

It is therefor that the title of this post should definitely be: The rat in the bag. Because I couldn’t be happier with my two ladies 🙂 (although chaoticscribbles, I might devote a whole post to their nasty behaviors as well!)

Hyvää päivää!

Did I buy a rat in a bag?

C(r)atty behavior!

Published October 11, 2012 by Kokomo

Soooooo, I havn’t been a good blogger lately. So sorry! It’s not that I lack funny or sweet stories, I lacked the mood to post about the ladies. See, last Sunday I returned home from a birthday where I spent a good part of the afternoon with a kitten on my lap. I played around with the little critter and obviously got catsmell all over me. When I got home, the ladies were ready to cuddle as I had been gone all weekend. But as soon as they smelled me, they freaked.

This has happened before, and I knew it was going to take a day or 2 for them to trust my smell again. So, I didn’t spend a lot of time with the ladies, or at home and soon decided blog time was future talk.

What also ruined my mood is the fact that I have discovered a MOUSE! It’s running around when the ladies are caged up and doesn’t seem to be intimidated by their smell at ALL. I just stuffed a really dirty and stinky towel I got out of the cage today in the corner where I know the mouse enters my room and I am HOPING that will keep it away. It sucks because thanks to the ladies, there is food everywhere for mice. In the past, the smell of my rats had always kept the critters away (even when I lived in a mouse infested house), but this one seems to have a mind of it’s own. Now it’s quite hard to distinguish rat-gnawing or mouse-gnawing on my food. I know people may think: what’s the difference? Well, my rats are domesticed and bare NO infectious diseases or bacteria at all. Mice are yucky!

But, back to the reason why I got back to posting. Today, the ladies were running around freely and as Koko was being her annoying and destroying self, Ruma had other plans. I am not sure if she was tired or maybe she’s not feeling very well, but the little madam, after climbing through my clothes twice, sat down on my right hand, right in the palm and started washing herself. Not a big exception, she does wash herself 2/3 of the day, but today was different. She washed and washed and itched and scratched and occasionally licked my hands and when she was finished, after about 7 minutes, she curled up and settled down. IN THE PALM OF MY HAND!

We’re talking a female rat here, infamous for not being able to sit still, and above that Ruma, who never likes to sleep in an open space.

To top all of this off, madam starts bruxing and boggling. With her little paws she grabs my thumb and holds on tightly to it and I manage to grab my phone with my left hand and capture this amazingly endearing moment. I managed to keep her there, and Koko away, for about ten minutes until my hand felt like it was going to fall off. I tried switching hands but I disturbed her too much and after some time, she buggered off on her own.

These moments remind me why I love rats. They are as stubborn as cats but when you get their affection, it is SO well deserved. Someone is going to have one good night’s sleep tonight! (despite of that STUPID mouse). <3<3<3

A rat lover can never get enough

Published September 15, 2012 by Kokomo

Why is it that when I search wordpress for pet-rat blogs it takes me ages to find just 4 or 5, and when I accidentally make a typo and spell ‘cats’ instead of ‘rats’ the number of blogs is overwhelming? It’s just injustice that there are so little blogs about these wonderful and funny critters. Youtube on the other hand, is overflowed by video’s of cage set-up’s how-to instructions or of silly rats sleeping in weird positions. I think video-people might be of a different kind than blog-people. Sad really, because in my opinion, it is SO much fun to read about pet rats. Maybe even more fun than to watch them.

I’ll admit, I have a bunch of video’s of my two ladies of mischief myself, but none worthy of posting on youtube, or my blog for that matter. I’d much rather write, write, write. Read an interesting post by Chaoticscribbles (http://hamsterdiaries.wordpress.com/) today about petblogs and how most of them die off due to the fact that they can be too much on one topic. I sincerely hope Chaotic, that my blog will prove you wrong. I intend to keep writing about my two awesome ladies for as long as they live. But I do have to admit that I might not get new ones right after that, so maybe then my blog will die off (I hope not). It’s not just a way for me to talk about all the adventures that take place (and have taken place) in my tiny studio apartment everyday, it’s also a way to keep me writing. Because, as much as I love my ladies, I love writing more. And it is what I need to do. Just 3 days into this blog I already feel happier writing again.

So even though I am going slightly off topic from my title, I would also like to thank Sanne (http://suchislifesanne.wordpress.com/) for inspiring me to start a blog about my rats. Who knows, maybe a new blog will floe from it.

Back to topic though, I wish more people posted about their pet rats. They are wonderful, smart, funny, strong willed animals that are highly trainable and very entertaining (day and night). I have convinced several of my friends so far that they are not nearly as scary as people think they are and some now even allow them to sit in their laps for a bit (Yeah, like my girls are going to sit still for even more than 2 seconds). This post therefor, is a rally for rats. If you like pet rats, if you like my blog (so far), if you agree that rats should get rid of their bad image. Please share my blog as much as you can, with as many people as you can. And please also feel free to share any cool blogs or other things about rats in the comments. I can literally never get enough! Thnx!
